A 28-year-old man tried to skip out on taxi fare after a cab driver dropped him off at the 100 block of Second Street Southeast in Austin — all the way from La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said the suspect allegedly told the driver he didn’t have the money to pay the $218.10 fare from La Crosse to Austin — about 100 miles — at about 2 a.m. Thursday. He allegedly told the driver he would get money out of his house, but disappeared soon after, according to Krueger.

Officers found the suspect walking in the area a short time later. The suspect told police he was walking to a friend’s house to get the money, but he couldn’t say why he didn’t tell the cab driver beforehand.

The man paid $72.25 toward the cab fare and was taken to the Mower County jail pending formal charges. Krueger said the man had no permanent address.
