Jeanette Mary Hernes, 86, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Hospital Rochester – Saint Marys Campus.

She was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Gust and Anna (Ness) Hernes. After attending grade school in Minneapolis, Jeanette moved to Austin where she attended Lincoln School and Austin High School, graduating in 1947. She completed her nurse’s training in Faribault, and then began her 50-year nursing career, including many years spent at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin.

Jeanette enjoyed handiwork; among her favorites were knitting, crocheting and sewing. In her younger years, she enjoyed ice skating. An avid traveler, she enjoyed her many trips to Norway. She also liked to go to the movies, play bingo, and go for rides. She expressed her love for the outdoors by going fishing and visiting the Hormel Nature Center. A member of the Camera Club and the Sons of Norway, Jeanette also enjoyed music and she loved cats.

Survivors include one nephew, David Lyons of Austin, Minnesota; and two great nieces: Amanda and Kelly.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gust and Anna Hernes; her sister Alyce; and nephew John Lyons.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, 2015, at the Worlein Funeral Home Chapel in Austin with Todd Portinga, A.I.M., officiating. Jeanette’s family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Grandview Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Mayo Clinic Health System Austin Foundation, the Mower County Humane Society, or recipient of donor’s choice.
