Verlet Florand, 93, of Austin, Minnesota, died Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at Our House Memory Care in Austin after residing there for four years.

Verlet was born July 30, 1921, in Sargeant Township of Mower County to Oscar and Eda (Johnson) Bungum. She attended Austin Public Schools and as a young woman she worked in her parents’ restaurant, and then later worked as a sales associate at Wallace’s, Buttrey’s and Fantle’s. Verlet was married to Elmo Florand on June, 21, 1941. Verlet and Elmo loved to go fishing “up north” over the years. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing and their beloved dogs. After Elmo’s death in 1982, Verlet and Arleigh Hanson became reacquainted and enjoyed over 20 years as loving partners. Verlet was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Eagle’s Auxiliary and the Senior Citizen’s Center.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elmo; and her partner, Arleigh Hanson.

Verlet is survived by her loving friends, Leo and Ramona Kerling, who were her guardians for six years; as well as several cousins and friends. Blessed be her memory.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 13, 2015, at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary with the Rev. Paul Lutter officiating. Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Memorials may be given to St. Olaf Lutheran Church, the Mower County Humane Society, or Heartland Hospice. The family would like to thank the staff at Our House and at Heartland Hospice for the compassionate care given to Verlet.
