Austin police are investigating a series of car break-ins that took place over the weekend.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said several cars were broken into on Friday and Sunday on the west side of the city.

Thieves stole a wallet with credit cards, cash and a social security card from an unlocked Pontiac Grand Prix at the 1000 block of Second Avenue Northwest Friday night, at some point between 7:30 and 9:45 p.m.

Someone also broke into several cars, including a Mercury Sable and a Chevy Equinox, on Sunday, according to Krueger. Residents reported the break-in and a missing purse containing cash, credit cards, insurance information and more around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Krueger urged residents to keep their car doors locked.
