Minnesota Salmonella sparks nationwide recall

Salmonella illnesses in Minnesota have sparked a nationwide recall of nearly 2 million pounds of chicken.

Aspen Foods — part of Chicago-based Koch Poultry Co. — is recalling frozen, raw, stuffed and breaded chicken that was sold under a number of different brands. The chicken may be contaminated with salmonella enteritidis, a common form of salmonella bacteria that can cause severe illness.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service began investigating a cluster of salmonella enteritidis illnesses last month. Three illnesses occurred in May and June in Minnesota and were found to be linked to the recalled chicken, the agency said.

The recalled chicken was produced between April 15 and July 10 and has “best if used by” dates between July 14, 2016, and October 10, 2016. The chicken also has “P-1358” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The USDA said that the recalled chicken may appear to be cooked but it is raw.

Brands associated with the recall include: Acclaim, Antioch Farms, Buckley Farms, Centrella Signature, Chestnut Farms, Family Favorites, Kirkwood, Koch Foods, Market Day, Oven Cravers, Rose, Rosebud Farm, Roundy’s, Safeway Kitchens, Schwan’s, Shaner’s, Spartan and Sysco.
