Several Rose Creek homes and a church were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after road workers accidentally caused a gas leak.
Mower County Sheriff Terese Amazi said it took more than an hour to fix the leak, which took place at about 2 p.m. Tuesday when workers struck a mismarked gas pipe near the 400 block of Ash Street.
Firefighters, emergency personnel and Mower County deputies evacuated nearby homes and about 50 elementary-aged children at Bible School in St. Peter Church.
The children were taken to the Rose Creek Fire Hall, where they were picked up by their parents, according to Amazi. No one fell ill or was injured during the leak.
Minnesota Energy workers took more than an hour to respond to the scene and shut off gas. Emergency personnel helped residents monitor gas levels at their home and restart their service.
