About 123 golfers and 140 people attended the Packer Classic Sunday and Monday to raise money for the Austin Public Education Foundation, the non-profit foundation dedicated to supporting students of Austin Public Schools.

“This was probably our biggest and best event ever,” Jason Baskin, a member of the planning committee, said. “And what really set this apart was this was the first year we had a banquet.”

The 18th annual classic added a banquet and silent auction on Sunday to go along with Monday’s golf outing. Baskin said the banquet addition allowed people to support the event even if they didn’t want to golf.

The event surpassed its goal of $20,000 and topped $25,000 — $20,000 in sponsorship cash donations, along with $5,000 from the auctions, according to unofficial totals.

“We exceeded the goal, which is great,” Baskin said.

A big part of the event was also the volunteers who helped get sponsorships and made the event run smoothly.

The proceeds go to students at Austin Public Schools, according to Baskin, through different grants for programs that don’t normally receive funding in the regular budget. Things the proceeds have helped in the past include the Robotics Team and science projects for kindergartners.

“It was just a great event and we look forward to making it even bigger and better next year,” Baskin said.

The Austin Public Education Foundation was founded in 1990, and is a separate 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation separate from Austin Public Schools. The sole beneficiaries of its projects are the students of Austin Public Schools. The Foundation has awarded more than $400,000 in grants since its inception to over 4,000 students and the teachers who guide them. For the 2014-15 school year, $33,175 in grants was awarded for projects and programs.
