A local family will continue a cancer-fighting tradition this weekend to help carry on a Lyle woman’s legacy.
The family of Tracy Schilling will host the Halfway to January Cancer Bash at 4 p.m. this Saturday at the Lyle American Legion.
Tracy formed the cancer bash in 2006 to raise funds for the Lyle Area Cancer Auction. Though Tracy was fighting cancer last year, she was determined to host the bash and it raised a record $12,290. Tracy passed away last December.
Now, her sons Jordan Schilling, of London, Minnesota, and Alex Schilling, of Des Moines, Iowa, are carrying on the event and helped plan this weekend’s festivities.
“I’m glad to be taking it over,” Jordan said.
Tracy’s mother, Pat Peters, is glad to see the tradition continue.
“I think it’s wonderful that they are following through with what their mother started,” Pat said. “She was very dedicated to it.”
Jordan said it’s a good way to honor his mother’s memory. Though he’s a bit nervous for his first time planning the bash, he hopes for a good turnout and good weather.
The event will feature a stretch auction throughout the night and a live auction at 8 p.m. The annual Cruise for a Cure will also be this weekend. There will also be pulled pork sandwiches, a bake sale, a bean bag tournament and more.
