Police: Hospital bed set on fire in escape from locked unit

BRAINERD — Police say a patient in a locked unit at a central Minnesota hospital made a brief escape after setting a bed on fire.

KSTP-TV reports police and firefighters were called to Essential Health St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd around 7 p.m. Monday.

Staffers at the hospital say it appeared the bed was set aflame to make a fire alarm go off.

According to police, the suspect and two accomplices fled the scene in a vehicle and were stopped around 11 p.m. by police from Becker, which is about 80 miles south of Brainerd.

The three were arrested.
