The city of Austin could embark on another sewer project for an incoming neighborhood.
Another Austin Township neighborhood near Turtle Creek — dubbed Turtle Creek 2 — hopes to hook into the city of Austin’s sewer system, but the project could be expensive. Public Works Director Steven Lang told the Austin City Council on Monday the residents could have to pay as much as $22,722 to hook up to the city.
About 40 properties make up the Turtle Creek 2 neighborhood. Of that, 32 homeowners voted to move forward with being annexed into the city, five have voted against, one property owner could go either way, and an owner of two properties hasn’t yet voted.
The project would mark the first time the city has used its sewer access fee, which residents must pay before they can hook up to a sewer system. The city of Austin previously used assessments for sewer projects, but legal battles in 2012 with residents of the former Lansing Township who were annexed into the city caused city officials to rethink how they assess properties.
The council had previously approved the neighborhood’s annexation last summer.
