“We were pretty flat in the second game,” Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner said.

The Class A state tournament was a big learning experience for a Hayfield team that starts six freshman and was playing in its first state tournament since 1994. Freshman Kyal Heydt doubled in a run in her first at bat of the day, but she said things got tough as the day went on.

“It was very hard. We tried to keep our hopes up with everything and I thought we did pretty good,” Heydt said. “For all of us underclassmen it’s such a learning experience. There’s tougher competition here and I think it’ll make us ten times better for next year.”

Hayfield head coach Jana Wagner said making a run in the Section 1A tournament and getting to state will pay off in the long run for the Vikings.

“I think it’s valuable for them in every season because they’ve got a taste of what it can be,” Wagner said. “They’ll be better at volleyball, they’ll be better at basketball and they should be back here [in softball] next year. Our team is basically the same team next year.”
