A rally in the Austin skies

Area children ages 8 to 17 will have a chance to take to the skies for free from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Young Eagles Flight Rally will be held at the Austin Municipal Airport and is hosted by Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 386. Registration starts at 10:30 a.m.

“We hope to build one-to-one relationships between pilots and young people, giving a new generation a chance to learn more about the possibilities that exist in the world of aviation,” said spokesman Mike Bibus in a press release.

Participants will go on a flight and learn about how airplanes work.

After the flight, each participant will receive a certificate making them an official Young Eagle. They will then be entered into the “World’s Largest Logbook,” which is on display at the EAA Air Adventure Museum in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The rally is part of the EAA Young Eagles Program, created to interest young people in aviation. Since the program launched in 1992, volunteer EAA pilots have flown more than 1.4 million young people.

Each Young Eagle should be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. More information can be found at eaa.org or youngeagles.org.
