Baseball: Post 91 overcomes errors to sweep Winona

The Austin Post 91 baseball team showed a little wear and tear as it was playing its seventh game in six days, but it was still able to get the job done. Austin shook off eight errors to sweep a doubleheader against Winona by scores of 3-2 and 10-4 in Marcusen Park Tuesday.
Austin (9-1 overall) took the lead for good in the first game when Jordan Hart came up with a sacrifice fly that made it 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hart hit two doubles and he knocked in four runs in the nightcap to boost Austin to the win.
Although Post 91 is off to a strong start in the win column, the team still wants to raise it’s level of play.
“We’ve got to focus each night,” Hart said. “We can’t be screwing around and we need to come and do what we need to do to get better. We’ve got to work hard all of the time.”
Austin’s pitchers allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings of work on Tuesday.
“The pitching was excellent. We kept the walks down and attacked the zone. You have to tip your cap to the pitchers,” Post 91 co-head coach Andy Swank said. “It wasn’t our best two games all around, but we’ll take two wins.”
Jake Reinartz struck out 11 in five and two-thirds of an inning in the opener and Nik Gasner struck out eight in six innings in the second game. Reinartz was able to use his fast ball to get out of a couple of jams, including once in the third inning when he struck out Winona’s No. 5 hitter with the bases loaded and two outs. Reinartz also came up with back-to-back strikeouts when Winona had runners on first and second with one out in the first.
“[My fast ball is] a pretty big weapon,” Reinartz said. “I try not to throw as hard as I possibly can unless I need to, because it’s harder to control it. If I can throw it in the right spots, it works pretty well.”
Post 91 committed more errors than usual on Tuesday, but that could have been due to the heavy workload the team has put in recently.
“We’ve played a lot of baseball lately, and we’re hoping that had something to do with it and we’re hoping it doesn’t continue,” Reinartz said. “Usually we don’t have that many errors.”
While the first game was broken open late, Post 91 took control of the second game when it took 5-2 lead on an RBI bunt by Nate Conner in the third inning. Austin put the game away with five runs in the fifth.
The second game looked more impressive on the scoreboard, but the first game was more important for Post 91 to see how it reacts to being in a tight contest. Austin had led 2-0 in that game when Winona tied things up at 2-2 in the top of the fifth.
“It’s good to have close games,” Hart said. “We want to see if we’re going to be a team that lays down or dies or if we’re going to be a team that overcomes it.”
Austin will now take a three-day break as it focuses on the Mankato tournament, which begins Friday.
