ST. PAUL — Hayfield senior Cody Carpentier was able to get to the state podium in shot put for the first time ever, but he was hoping for more at the Minnesota Class A state tournament in Hamline University Friday.

Carpentier didn’t reach 49 feet until the finals and he made his best throw his last as he hit a distance of 50 feet, 8.25 inches to take sixth place overall. Last season, Carpentier didn’t make it out of the prelims at state.

“I had a bad preliminary round and it’s tough to come back from that. Last year when I choked it just kind of shut me down and this year I kind of came back,” Carpentier said.

Tyler Morgan of Windom Area won the meet with a distance of 52 feet, 10.5 inches and Carpentier felt he could’ve beaten that mark if he would’ve had his best day.

“I threw a 53-6 earlier in the year and in my mind I was the one to beat, but I just couldn’t get everything out of me,” Carpentier said.

Carpentier will compete in the discus finals at Hamline Saturday.
