The Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau is ready to reward more hometown tourists.

This week, the CVB announced a Blackout Bingo drawing as part of its 2015 Be A Tourist in Your Own Hometown contest.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to get out and visit attractions around our community,” CVB Executive Director Nancy Schnable said.

The contest, launched during National Tourism Week, will give residents the chance to visit 20 locations around town and enter a drawing for $100 in chamber bucks. Residents can visit popular places such as the Austin ArtWorks Center or the Mower County Historical Society, where they can pick up a BINGO Blackout sheet.

Participants must visit all 20 locations by the end of the year and get staff to initial their cards. From there, residents will be entered into a random drawing for two $100 Chamber Buck prizes.

“We have a lot of great places to see in Austin,” Schnable said. “It’s going to be very exciting.”

The contest comes as the CVB picks up business over the summer months. Schnable told the Mower County Board of Commissioners Tuesday that tourists are still coming to Austin despite the community’s biggest attraction, the Spam Museum, closed as Hormel Foods Corp. relocates the building to downtown Austin. According to Schnable, more residents are coming to the area for conferences and large-scale events.

“We’re serving a different demographic right now,” Schnable said.
