ST. PAUL — The Minnesota State Patrol and more than 300 law enforcement agencies across the state are making a concerted effort this week to crack down on distracted drivers.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says cell phones, GPS navigation, music controls and eating and drinking can all be distractions that can cause accidents. Safety officials say distraction was a factor in 16,900 crashes last year, resulting in 56 deaths and 165 serious injuries.

The agencies’ extra enforcement runs through Saturday.
