The Austin baseball team split a doubleheader at Rochester Mayo (5-6 overall, 3-4 Big Nine) by scores of 20-4 in five innings and it bounced back to win the nightcap 7-3.

The Packers (2-8 overall, 1-8 Big Nine) scored first in the opener, but their pitchers struggled to find the plate and the Mayo hitters were able to take advantage.

“We had some breakdowns and we would get behind the count where they were sitting fast ball and they were hitting the ball,” Austin head coach Chris Gogolewski said.

Austin junior Jake Reinartz picked up his first varsity win in the nightcap as he threw 132 pitches to get the complete game victory. Reinartz struck out ten.

“Jake went out and threw strike after strike and he didn’t let up. He helped us out big time. The guys responded and we chipped away,” Gogolewski said.

The opening loss to Mayo was the most lop-sided loss of the season for Austin, but the Packers were able to bounce back in game two.

“The mood was different [in the second game], they were light hearted and they were having fun. They played really well,” Gogolewski said.
