A musical documentary highlighting Minnesota musicians is set to air on public television this week.

“On Eagle’s Wings – Minnesota’s Sacred Music” will show at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 on KSMQ.

This one-hour documentary explores the dramatic shift in sacred music beginning in the 1960s, when major religions attempted to reach out to a younger generation of followers. Minnesota is home to a significant number of highly accomplished songwriters and musicians who have helped bring new music to many faiths. Prior to this revival, traditional church music was often taken from the body of work created in the late 1800s.

Roman Catholic priest Father Jan Michael Joncas, composer of the well-known “On Eagle’s Wings,” explains how the needs of the church were changing and how he and his colleagues worked to fill the void. Other featured composers include Marty Haugen, Sister Delores Dufner and David Haas. You may not know their names, but the songs that fill the air are familiar to many.
