ST. PAUL — A Republican state senator wants to split Minnesota’s health insurance exchange into two separate entities.

MNsure currently signs up residents in private plans and public programs like MinnesotaCare and Medical Assistance. Sen. Michelle Benson unveiled a bill Thursday that would split those up.

The Ham Lake Republican says the combined entity isn’t serving Minnesotans well.

It’s one of several proposals Republicans have made to change MNsure this session after a rocky rollout last year. GOP lawmakers also want to add an insurance industry representative to the exchange’s board and give the Legislature budgetary oversight.
