Lyle-Pacelli senior Madison Truckenmiller went on a scoring spree and she earned her place in the 1,000 point club as the Athletics downed Fillmore Central (12-9 overall) 65-27 in Pacelli Gym Monday.

Truckenmiller drilled a 3-pointer the first time she touched the ball and she went on to score 24 points and grab six rebounds. She scored her milestone point on a post-up move late in the game.

Truckenmiller didn’t know her milestone was on the horizon, but she’s honored to join her teammates Sarah Holtz and Courntey Walter as a 1,000-point scorer.

“I was kind of calm today and I shot really well,” Truckenmiller said. “It’s very special [to get 1,000]. Working from seventh grade to when we weren’t really winning to now is really rewarding.”

LP head coach Justin Morris said that Truckenmiller has the potential to be a volume scorer when she relaxes like she did on Tuesday.

“She just kind of got in a zone. She’s always been a good shooter. When she stops thinking and gets in a rhythm, she’s a really good basketball player and that’s what happened tonight,” Morris said. “She’s as hard a worker and as a good a kid as we have in our program.”

LP has been looking for a change in identity after struggling with its half court offense in losses to Goodhue and Southland. On Tuesday, the Athletics (17-3 overall) looked very different and they were very effective on offense.

Despite not getting very many break-away lay-ups or 3-pointers in the first half, LP still jumped out to a 40-10 lead at the break. That’s because LP took care of the ball and stayed in motion. The Athletics had 13 assists on 15 field goals in the first half and just two turnovers.

“When the ball movement is at that level, we become a completely different team,” Morris said. “We’ve always been an effective full court basketball team. We’re really trying to focus more on being a team that executes in the half court.”

Courtney had five points, seven assists and three steals for LP, Brooke Walter had 11 points, four assists and four steals and Sara Holtz had 16 points.

Courtney said the team plays better together when they remain active on offense like they were on Tuesday.

“We definitely want to get everyone involved and we figured that that offense would probably do the best job of doing that. If we get everyone involved, we play a lot better as a team,” Courtney said. “We feel so much better [after this win]. We haven’t been playing the best before Christmas break, so it felt really good to start playing a lot better before playoffs started.”

Courtney was one of the first players to greet Truckenmiller after she notched her 1,000th point.

“I was so excited for Madison,” Courtney said. “We’ve been playing together forever and I could not be more proud to have her join the 1,000 point club.”
