Carol Laura Williams, 88

Carol Laura Williams, 88, died on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2015, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.

Carol was born Oct. 14, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ferdinand and Laura (Meyer) Weigand. The family lived in Elmhurst, Illinois, until Carol was 3-years old and then moved to Lombard, Illinois, where she grew up. She attended elementary school at Lincoln School in Lombard and graduated from Glenbard Township High School in Glen Ellyn in 1944. She stayed home a year to help care for her mother who was ill. She then commuted to Elmhurst College for a year and then transferred to Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. Carol earned a Bachelor’s Degree in elementary education in 1949. She taught in Des Moines at Douglas School and in Waterloo at Roosevelt School.

In 1950 she married Calvin Williams in Lombard. They lived in Waterloo until 1952 and then moved to Corwith, Iowa, to farm. In 1958, they purchased their farm near Mona, Iowa. Carol left teaching when the boys were young but returned to it in 1959. She taught third, fourth and second grades in Lyle, Minnesota, for over 30 years and retired in 1990. After retirement her time was spent with family, volunteer work, church activities, her home gardening, handwork and reading. Carol joined the Mona Lutheran Church by adult confirmation in 1971 and is now a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lyle.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Roy Weigand; a grandson, Shaun Williams.

Carol is survived by sons: Kenneth (Peggy) Williams, Apple Valley, Minnesota, Kelvin (Carolyn) Williams, Austin, Minnesota, Keith (Barbara) Williams, St. Ansgar, Kevin (Betty) Williams of Forest City, Iowa; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kenneth, Isabelle and Abigail Williams, Candice, Derek, Evan and Zane Nordquist, Kimberly, John, Tyler and Alissa Wernz, Kyle and Bryn Williams, Kelsey Jo and Steven Coon, Kevin Cody Williams, Kristen Williams, Michelle Williams.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lyle, Minnesota. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mona, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, Iowa. Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
