MINNEAPOLIS — A Korean War veteran has been laid to rest in a Twin Cities cemetery more than six decades after his death.

Gordon Hannah Jr. obtained the remains of his father Monday and buried him with full military honors at Fort Snelling on Wednesday.

Hannah’s father went missing during a battle in South Korea and ended up in a prisoner of war camp. The Hannah family learned in 1953 that he had died of dysentery two years previously. His remains were recovered in 2000 during the evacuation of a burial site.

Hannah received a call in late November saying his father had been located.

He said that he has prayed during his lifetime that his father would be found and brought home.

Nearly 8,000 Americans who served in the Korean War are still unaccounted for.
