MINNEAPOLIS β€” A Minnesota couple who worked in law enforcement is accused of running a scam involving American Girl merchandise.

Investigators say the Farmington couple brought discount items bought online to the American Girl store at the Mall of America store for a full price refund. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says the couple returned about 135 items in 2013 and 2014.

Prosecutors say the couple made about $5,300. Freeman says it’s puzzling why people with good jobs would resort to this kind of scam. The Star Tribune says American Girl employees became suspicious of the couple in March 2014, so a manager began taking a closer look.
