The Austin boys basketball team had a big boost from some of its younger players in a 64-56 win at Winona (5-12 overall, 3-10 Big Nine) Tuesday.

The Packers (8-9 overall, 7-6 Big Nine) were a little shorthanded as Noah Brehmer was out with an illness and Gach Gach suffered a hip pointer in the first half of Tuesday’s game. Sophomre Kyle Oberbroeckling made his first start and he answered with nine points and seven rebounds.

Freshman Both Gach went 4-for-6 on 3-pointers while scoring 12 points and he hit a 3-pointer to put Austin up 54-47 with 3:30 left in the game.

“That was a really big shot in the game,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said.

Freshman Tate Hebrink scored 10 points for Austin, junior Zach Coffey had eight points and six assists and senior Levi Vierkandt had nine points.

“We’re happy to get the road win. Both teams were down a guy,” Fadness said. “It was sort of a grind it out game and thankfully we made a big shot here or there and were able to get a little bit of a cushion.”

The Packers will host Faribault Friday at 7:30 p.m. in what will be Hall of Fame Night in Packer Gym.
