LEROY — The Lyle-Pacelli girls basketball team didn’t play with its usual dominant style, but it did enough to reach a major milestone in LeRoy Thursday night.

The Athletics rattled off their 30th straight Southeast Conference win as they beat the Cardinals 55-25.

No. 7 ranked LP (3-0 overall, 3-0 SEC) started off slow as they traded baskets with the Cards (0-3 overall, 0-3 SEC) early on, but LP used a 14-0 run over a 10-minute stretch to boost their lead to 26-7 late in the first half.

LP junior Sarah Holtz led the charge as she scored 19 of her 24 points in the first half. Holtz also grabbed nine rebounds and had four steals in limited playing time.

“Every team has hard games, tonight was just one of them and we just didn’t have any spark,” Holtz said. “You’re going to have those nights, but the good teams make it through those nights and they’re able to come back and play with heart the next night.”

LP was never in any real danger of losing to LO, but LP head coach Justin Morris was glad that Holtz took over like she did. Holtz hit a few jumps shots, but she did most of her damage by running the floor and getting good looks inside.

“I thought we didn’t play up to our capabilities tonight, but the one thing you can always count on with Sarah Holtz is she’s always going to bring energy and great effort,” Morris said. “When one of your best players is always playing to her maximum capabilities in terms of her effort and energy level, that’s what you want out of a leader.”

The Athletics played their bench for much of the second half as Morris said he is looking to get his underclassmen game experience for the future of the program. Morris was pleased with the fact that the Athletics have put together a 30-game winning streak in a conference where they used to struggle to win any games.

“Four or five years ago the program was on the other end of the equation,” he said. “Now we come out on a nightly basis and expect to win games. That’s a huge accomplishment. Any time you win a varsity basketball game it’s a big deal, regardless of what conference you’re in and that kind of a record is humbling to us.”
