NWS warns of slick commute

The Austin area missed the brunt of the snow storm that dumped more than a foot of snow in areas, but that doesn’t mean conditions are perfect this morning.
The National Weather Service is warning of a slippery commute in southern Minnesota and northern Iowa after a combination of icy rain and snow overnight.
Light snow was expected to continue through the morning commute, and about 1 to 2 inches has already fallen across portions of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa.
The weather service urged caution since this is the first time drivers have faced slick conditions this season, which often can make for a higher than normal number of crashes.
The snow wasn’t expected to melt away instantly from roads this morning as below-freezing temperatures could produce a layer of ice under the snow, according to the weather service.
Blustery winds of 17 to 22 mph were expected today, along with a high of 27. Temperatures were expected to drop to about 13 tonight with wind chill values just below zero.
Highs will stay in the 20s well into next week, with lows in the teens and single digits.
