The Little Free Library at Neveln Elementary School was knocked to the ground Friday night and will have to be moved.

Principal Dewey Schara said there were no witnesses, but the library was knocked over and some of the books were taken out.

“It’s disappointing,” Schara said.

The library was not damaged.

“Not broken or damaged; books all recovered so we should be good,” Schara said.

One of the neighbors across the street came and picked up the books, and the school plans to have the library up and running again in a few days. Yet because of the incident, they will move the library to the front of the building, instead of on the playground where it was.

“That way if you’re coming to get a book you have to be intentional about it,” Schara said.

Earlier this month, the Austin Rotary Club partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build and install four little free libraries at the Austin Public Schools elementary schools: Banfield, Neveln, Southgate and Sumner.

The libraries typically feature an assortment of books for people of all ages that anyone can borrow and return.

Originally the Neveln library was placed in the playground for easier access to students, but since the school cannot control who uses the playground after school hours, Schara hopes removing the temptation will prevent further incidents.
