ST. PAUL — St. Paul officials plan to pay a $65,000 settlement to a man who says he was wrongfully bitten by a city police dog during a search for another person.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the city council will vote on the settlement to Kongmeng Kue this week. The 35-year-old man’s lawyer says his client suffered bites, scratches and other injuries requiring medical treatment in the May 2012 incident.

Police say Kue was bitten during a search for a man who had dropped a gun.

The city says Kue’s constitutional rights weren’t violated and that the actions of the officers involved were lawful. City Attorney Sara Grewing says the city is settling because Kue would have had a good chance of winning if a lawsuit had gone to court.
