Packer football team will host No. 10 Owatonna Friday

The Packer football team might be getting the Owatonna Huskies at the worst time.
The No. 10 ranked and defending Class AAAAA state champion Huskies (3-1 overall, 3-1 Big Nine) are coming off their worst defeat in at least five years — a 69-0 loss at top-ranked Mankato West — and they’ll be sure to come into Art Hass Stadium with a chip on their shoulders Friday at 7 p.m.
Owatonna is not the same team it was last year as it beat Winona 14-6 in its opener and it had to edge out Rochester Century 40-37 in overtime, but it did beat Faribault 35-14.
“They’re running the stuff as last year, but they’re not the same team by any stretch of the imagination,” Austin head coach Brett Vesel said. “But they’re still good.”
The Packers (1-3 overall, 1-3 Big Nine) are coming off a 48-20 loss to Faribault and they have yet to hold a team to less than 40 points this season.
Vesel said the team is working hard this week and he’s hoping for an improvement on Friday.
“We’ve just got to get better ourselves. We’ve go to go out there and compete,” he said. “We’ve got to execute on offense, defense and special teams better because we didn’t do as good a job as we wanted to last Friday.”
