It’s the time of year when volunteers from around Mower County come together for one day to help their neighbors complete projects they are otherwise not able to complete themselves.

The United Way of Mower County’s ninth annual Day of Caring will kick off with breakfast at 8 a.m. in the Austin High School cafeteria on Saturday, Sept. 27.

“Day of Caring is such a great event for everyone from the homeowner to the volunteer to the community as a whole,” Executive Director of United Way of Mower County Diane Baker said in a press release. “We are encouraging everyone to get involved this year. Form a team or sign up to have a project done by volunteers.”

Teams range in size from one to 21. After the kick-off breakfast at 8 a.m., volunteers will head out to their project sites. Most will be done within two hours. The projects range from simple window washing and yard cleanup to deck removal and waterproofing.

The projects help homeowners who might not otherwise be able to get projects done.

In addition to the project requests received at United Way, they also work with the CHORE program at the Mower County Senior Center.

Forms and more information can be found on the United Way of Mower County website at www.uwmower.org, or you can call the office at 507-437-2313.

The deadline to register a team to help with Day of Caring is Sept. 18. The deadline to submit a project request is Sept. 8.
