SKB Environmental, the company behind a local landfill, has withdrawn a request to create an ordinance to govern landfills.
SKB representatives told the Mower County Board they would withdraw a request for county officials to create an ordinance to, in effect, switch some part of landfill permitting from a public hearing to an administrative request.
The company purchased an additional 50 acres to the west of its current location and is exploring options for future developments, especially for integrated waste management techniques — a method where landfills repurpose or recycle some of it, and then dispose of the rest.
By creating an ordinance, the county would forego the conditional use permit process for landfills and replace it with a set of guidelines businesses would have to meet.
SKB also confirmed it had purchased nearby landfill Veit Solid Waste Facility, which is also a demolition landfill.
