A 38-year-old Austin man was arrested for drunken behavior after Austin police and firefighters were called to his apartment for a fire shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said the man allegedly drove past a police barricade to his apartment at the 600 block of Second Street Northwest and nearly ran over fire hoses.

Officers previously encountered the man at a call for a loud party at about 5:45 a.m., according to Krueger. Police gave the suspect a preliminary breath test and arrested him for DWI.

Firefighters found no flames inside his apartment. Krueger said the man allegedly put food on the stove and left the apartment for the house party, which caused the food to burn and set off smoke detectors.

Firefighters evacuated the apartment building and were on the scene for 45 minutes. Police had also cordoned off the area.
