Police arrested a 19-year-old Austin man who drove a taxi early Sunday after a high-speed chase through northwest Austin that reached up to 90 mph.
Police Chief Brian Krueger said the suspect faces felony fleeing police in a vehicle and driving without a license charges.
Officers spotted the suspect driving an AB Taxi minivan with no lights on at the 700 block of 10th Street Northwest at about 2:26 a.m. Sunday. Police followed the vehicle as it turned west and then north on 14th Street Northwest. The suspect allegedly picked up speed and drove through a four-way stop at 14th Street and Eighth Avenue Northwest, at which point officers gave chase.
Krueger said the suspect increased speed up to 90 mph as he drove over Interstate 90 and turned east onto 18th Avenue Northwest. The suspect couldn’t make the turn, however, and drove over the median, which blew out the taxi’s driver-side tires.
Police followed the suspect as he drove east in the westbound lane at about 45 to 50 mph. The suspect stopped at one point for a few seconds before he turned south on Fourth Street Northwest and tried to merge onto I-90.
Krueger said the suspect stopped at the bottom of the I-90 on-ramp, where police dragged him out of the vehicle and took him into custody after a brief scuffle on the ground. The suspect sustained a small cut to his face, which was treated at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.
The suspect allegedly told police he wasn’t a taxi driver for AB Taxi but his relative worked there. The company owner declined to press charges against the suspect for taking the car, according to Krueger.
