Suspect pleads not guilty to punching, threatening woman with knife

An Austin man accused of punching and threatening to kill another person with a knife pleaded not guilty Thursday in Mower County court.
Kevin Berard Thompson, 40, was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic assault and terroristic threats, all felonies.
According to a court complaint, police met with the victim at the Kwik Trip on Fourth Avenue Northwest at 10:30 p.m. on June 15. Officers noticed the victim had a bruised left eye, scratches and cuts on her face and left arm.
The victim told police Thompson had come home drunk to his apartment at the 800 block of Eighth Avenue Northwest. Thompson allegedly got into an argument with the victim, threw his keys at her eye and punched her several times.
According to the complaint, the victim ran to the bathroom and shut the door, but Thompson threatened to kill her if she didn’t open it. The victim opened the door and Thompson threatened to kill her once again. The victim told police Thompson allegedly grabbed a large knife and began poking the victim with it. He allegedly told the victim he would put her “in the woods,” according to the complaint.
Police put out an alert for Thompson who was found in Le Seuer County. Owatonna police also encountered Thompson at about 8:45 p.m. that day.
Thompson was transferred to the Mower County jail. He told police he hadn’t seen the victim since early that morning and was at a picnic at Lions Park until 5 p.m. He said he had met someone in Owatonna at about 5:30 p.m.
Thompson was convicted of sexual assault in 2004 in Colorado, misdemeanor assault in 2007 and misdemeanor harassment in 2009.
