WASECA — The parents and lawyer for a Minnesota teen accused of planning to massacre his family and high school classmates say he’s apparently not getting the mental health treatment he needs.

The 17-year-old was arrested in April after authorities said they found him with bomb-making materials in a storage locker in Waseca. Two months later, the teen is in a Red Wing state juvenile facility awaiting trial on charges including attempted murder.

Defense attorney Dawn Johnson tells the Star Tribune the state’s attitude seems to be to “punish and not to get help for someone who clearly needs it and is asking for it.”

The boy’s parents say a counselor has been seeing their son in the facility, but often for only a few minutes and less often in recent weeks.
