Austin’s Schwab and Baker are headed to state track and field meet

The Austin track and field team will have three participants at the Class AA state meet this week.

Austin eighth grader Paiton Schwab took first in the 1600-meter run and Austin senior Andrew Baker took first in the 800-meter run to qualify for state at the Section 1AA meet in Lakeville South Saturday.

Schwab and Baker will join junior Carolyn Hackel, who qualified for state in the long jump on Thursday.

Schwab won the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:12.25. She edged out Rochester JM’s Emma Christensen by two-tenths of a second to win the race. Schwab was in third place with 125 meters left in the race and she turned it on down the stretch to move into first place. She passed Christensen just as they neared the finish line.

Baker won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:59.59.

Connor Sheehan took third in the 400-meter dash and he was about one second from qualifying for state.

The Class AA meet will take place Friday and Saturday at Hamline University in St. Paul.

Triple jump: Sydney Marsh (14th, 32-2.25); shot put: Amber Hansen (10th, 34-6.25); pole vault: Marsh (10th, 9-0); 100-meter hurdles: Rachel Quandt (seventh, 16.70); 1600-meter run: Pation Schwab (first, 5:12.25); Madison Overby (fourth, 5:21.55) 300-meter hurdles: Kendall Hackensmith (fourth, 47.09); Carolyn Hackel (sixth, 27.34)
