The Southland Middle School Student Council completed its last service project of the year, which benefitted the Mower County Humane Society.

Ninety-five sixth, seventh and eighth-graders spent six days collecting items from the Humane Society’s wish list.

They collected: 16 large bottles of bleach, 14 small bottles of bleach, 33 bottles of laundry detergent, 40 rolls of paper towels, 606 pounds of dog food, 239 pounds of cat food, eight dog kongs, 905 dryer sheets, 356 garbage bags (40-plus gallon size), 25 dog toys (ropes/Frisbees), three doses of Frontline for cats, one dose of Frontline for dogs, 2,230 aluminum cans and $318.75 in cash.

While at the Humane Society, the students unloaded all of the items, were introduced to the animals waiting for their “forever homes,” and helped clean out kennels and cages.
