Hackel qualifies for state in long jump, other Packers headed to Section 1AA finals

Austin junior Carolyn Hackel had a big day at the Section 1AA preliminary meet in Lakeville South Thursday.

Hackel broke her own AHS record in the long jump and qualified for state in that event and she also took fourth place in the 200-meter dash preliminaries to qualify for Saturday’s finals.

Hackel jumped a distance of 17 feet, 4.75 inches on Thursday and she took first in the Section 1AA meet. Hackel, who has ran sprints at the state track and field meet the past two years, will be long jumping at the state meet for the first time in her career.

Austin’s Connor Sheehan and Andrew Baker each put themselves in a good position to get to the state meet. Baker won the 800-meter run preliminary with a time of 2:00.41 and Sheehan ran a time of 51.33 seconds in the 400-meter dash to take third in the prelims.

Austin’s Gabe Gerstner advanced to the 200-meter dash finals with a sixth place finish in the prelims.

The Austin boys and girls hurdlers had a strong day as three runners advanced to the finals for the first time in their careers.

Sophomore Rachel Quandt ran a time of 16.88 seconds that was good for ninth place in the 100-meter hurdles prelims and Kendall Hackensmith ran a season’s best time of 47.46 seconds and took fifth.

“It was a good day,” Austin head girls track and field coach Nancy Jones said. “Kendall hurt her foot in the 100 hurdles and she still managed to make finals in the 300-hurdles.”

Junior Adam Bergstrom advanced to the finals in the 110-meter hurdles with a ninth place finish and he made it to the 300-meter hurdles finals with a ninth place finish.

Austin freshman Paige Raymond ran a career best time of 51.07 seconds and took 11th in the 300-hurdles.

Andrew Hagan took fourth in the shot put with a distance of 53 feet-7.25 and was about a foot from qualifying from the state meet.

Madison Overby finished in sixth place in the 3200-meter run for the Packer girls.
