The Austin softball team did a lot right in its season opener.

The Packers played error free ball and they limited Mankato West’s scoring chances. But it wasn’t enough as Austin lost 1-0 in Mankato Thursday.

The Scarlets (1-0 overall, 1-0 Big Nine) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good as Austin (0-1 overall, 0-1 Big Nine) finished the game with just two hits.

“We played really good for our first game and we did a great job of getting out of some jams,” Austin head coach Cindy Owen said.
