DULUTH — Bait shops, resorts and other businesses in northern Minnesota are watching the weather and hoping for warmer temperatures to melt the ice on lakes before the fishing opener next month.

Fredenberg Minno-Ette bait and tackle shop owner Scott Youngstrom is one of many hoping for an opener without ice, but says some lakes still have a thick covering of ice. Youngstrom says last year’s icy opener really hurt business.

Angler Jeff Somrock tells WDIO-TV fishing on the Knife River Monday was surprisingly good.
