DULUTH — A trio of U.S. Coast Guard cutters has arrived in the Twin Ports to help iron ore ships navigate the Great Lakes.
The USCGC Mackinaw, along with two smaller ice cutters, arrived in the Duluth port Monday evening. They will be headed to Two Harbors Wednesday to help lead lakers filled with iron ore down to the steel mills on the lower Great Lakes.
It’s the first time since World War II that several cutters are needed because of the volume of ice. The Soo Locks open Friday.
