Dean’s lists

Hope Elizabeth McAlister, a 2012 Austin High School graduate, competed Marine Corps basic training at Parris Island, S.C., Jan. 10. She completed infantry training in LeJeune, N.C. on Feb. 21.

Rotary studentsof the month

Austin High School’s Erin Dankert and Jacob Kempen were named Austin Rotary Students of the Month in January and February and both were invited to lunch with the club.

Dankert’s activities and hobbies include the Austin Packer Dance Team, volleyball, softball, Just For Kix Dance, choir, Choraleires, band, National Honor Society, youth leadership and link crew. Her recognitions include being a captain and being named all-conference with the Austin Packer Dance team; she was the National Honor Society treasurer; she made the straight-A honor roll; she was named to the Minnesota State High School League academic all-state list; and she received 10 Spotlight on Scholarship awards.

She plans to attend college to pursue pre-med and a career as a pediatrician.

“I am so lucky to be in a school system where honors classes are an option for me,” she wrote. “This, and some exceptional teachers, has excelled my education greatly and given me the option to attend an outstanding university.”

Kempen’s activities and hobbies include varsity football, baseball and basketball, along with band and National Honor Society.

He was an academic letter winner in 2013 and Big Nine conference scholar athlete in 2013. He plans to attend either the University of Northern Iowa or the University Wisconsin-Madison to major in accounting.

“I think that my educational experience has been very good,” he wrote. “I have challenged myself well by taking advanced placement courses along with taking college courses through the high school. I have really enjoyed it.”
