Austin police arrested a 30-year-old man from Chicago Friday night on multiple charges after the man bit an officer attempting to remove crack cocaine bundles from his mouth.

Police Chief Brian Krueger said police stopped a car with the suspect and a 28-year-old driver, also from Chicago, at the 200 block of Second Avenue Northeast at about 10:55 p.m. Friday. The driver failed to stop at a stop sign.

While one officer interviewed the driver, another noticed the suspect trying to hide something under his cell phone and putting something in his mouth. Officers asked the suspect to spit out what he had, but the suspect refused.

Police eventually removed nine bundles of crack cocaine weighing 3.5 grams overall from the suspect’s mouth. The man bit an officer, but the officer did not have a lasting wound and didn’t seek medical treatment, according to Krueger.

The suspect was arrested for fifth-degree sale of crack cocaine, fifth-degree possession of cocaine, fifth-degree sale of marijuana, and fourth-degree assault on a police officer. Krueger said police also found $1,556 on the suspect, which was forfeited to police after his arrest. The driver was also cited for running a stop sign.

The suspect was taken to Mower County jail and awaits further charges from the Mower County Attorney’s office.
