The Hayfield boys basketball team avenged an earlier blowout loss to Bryon by edging out the Bears (17-8 overall, 13-3 HVL) 60-58 in Byron Tuesday.
Byron had the ball down three with four seconds left when the Vikings intentionally fouled. Byron made the first free throw and missed the second on purpose. The Bears pulled down the offensive rebounds and they missed three shots before the final buzzer sounded.
“It was the longest four seconds of the season,” Hayfield head coach Chris Pack said.
Drew Streightiff poured in a career-high 26 points in the win for the Vikings (19-5 overall, 12-4 HVL Gold).
Hayfield trailed 35-30 early in the second half when it put together a 10-0 run over five minutes.
The win was a big one for Hayfield, which had struggled against the top teams in the HVL.
“It’s a confidence builder,” Pack said. “We hadn’t beaten any of the other top three teams in the conference and it’s good to prove we’re in their class.”
Hayfield 28-22 at the half
Hayfield 28 32 — 60
Byron 22 36 — 58
Hayfield scoring: Drew Streightiff, 26 (career high); Cole Kruger, 15; Jeremy, 12; Carter, 4; Merrick, 3; free throws: 15-for-28
