Grand Meadow-LeRoy-Ostrander-Kingsland’s Wyatt Richardson is ready to take on the Class ‘A’ state wrestling meet for the first time in his career Friday at Xcel Energy Center.
Richardson, a junior at Grand Meadow, isn’t exactly sure what to except at state, but he knows nerves shouldn’t be a big issue. Richardson won the U.S. Open Greco Roman Junior wrestling title this past summer in Las Vegas, Nev. and he’s played in two state championship games with the GM football team as a lineman.
“I’m trying to stay pretty calm and look at it as another tournament. I’m taking it one match at a time,” Richardson said.
Richardson is ranked No. 8 in Class ‘A’ at 195 pounds with a 25-4 overall record. He will open the state meet with a match against Ryley Smude of Peirz, who is 29-9.
“I’m just trying to stay open minded. Anybody can win it,” Richardson said. “There are a couple of people that have a better chance to win it, but I’m trying not to think too much.”
The consolation quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.
