Christ Episcopal Church is hosting a documentary on one of Minnesota’s darkest historical events Wednesday.
“Dakota 38,” about the execution of 38 Dakota residents in the 1860s and one man’s journey to understand his ancestors, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Minnesota is no stranger to Native American issues during its long history, and the hanging of 38 Dakota in Mankato on Dec. 26, 1862, still stands as the largest mass execution in U.S. history.
Jim Miller, a Native American spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran whose dream inspired the 330-mile horseback ride, will introduce the film and lead a conversation afterwards.
In the spring of 2005, Miller found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota. Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged. At the time, Miller knew nothing of the execution, which was ordered by Abraham Lincoln during the Dakota War of 1862.
Miller’s journey through South Dakota to Mankato, eventually to the site of the hanging, is captured in the film.
