Interstate 90 open, travel slow and treacherous

Interstate 90 may be open again, but travel isn’t getting any easier.

As of 2:30 p.m. Friday, the Minnesota Department of Transportation was warning motorists on westbound Interstate 90 between Stewartville and Dexter to expect significant delays as snow removal crews work to get lanes passable.

MnDOT is using heavy equipment and snow blowers to open the westbound lanes of I-90. Westbound traffic will be stopped for 20 to 30 minutes at a time while crews move forward in the lanes on the 13-mile stretch. Then traffic will be ushered through. The traffic that arrives next will be stopped while more work is done on the snow.

Eastbound I-90 is open and drivable.

As of early Friday afternoon, many highways in southeastern Minnesota were limited to a single lane because of the drifting snow, while others were considered impassable.

MnDOT’s no travel advisory for all of southeastern Minnesota continues because of hazardous driving conditions with blowing snow, icy patches and reduced visibility. The advisory is for Mower, Rice, Steele, Dodge, Freeborn, Goodhue, Olmsted, Fillmore, Houston, Winona and Wabasha counties.
