Brownsdale Study Club
Lavonne Skov opened the Dec. 18 meeting of the Brownsdale Study Club, which was held at the home of Hazel Schlicting. Following the usual reading of the minutes and reports, the roll call was held. For this meeting, the theme was “Our Earliest Remembrance of Christmas,” which was followed by many interesting stories.
Rena Perrigo presented the outside reading, which was the story of Simeon, an aged saint present in the temple who recognized Jesus as the son of God when he was brought there as a baby.
Lavonne Skov gave a reading on the main topic. It was an interesting story about the thousands of islands off the coast of Sweden, much of which is owned by a Swedish conservation group, that are managed in an ecologically sound manner. Goats are used to maintain the open spaces that have been used as grasslands in the same way for thousands of years.
Nine members were present. New business included the selection of a new member. Three names were mentioned and will be contacted to see if they have an interest in joining the group.
One member of the Study Club is temporarily in Fieldcrest Care Center, and it was decided if she is not back in her home by the time of the January meeting, the meeting will be held at Fieldcrest so she can attend.
Sara Hatten will present a reading on the subject of study and discussion at the January meeting. Lunch will be provided by Sara Hatten and Rena Perrigo.
Other new business included making plans for celebrating the upcoming 90th anniversary of the Brownsdale Study Club in the fall of 2014. It was agreed to table further discussion on the matter until the June meeting.
There was also discussion on the annual get-together with the Hayfield Study Club, which will take place in Brownsdale.
Cards were sent to the club’s two members in nursing homes. The meeting was adjourned, and all enjoyed a tasty lunch served by Hazel.
