The Austin Police Department is warning residents that someone is attempting a scam by asking for donations to local law enforcement.

According to a police report, an Austin woman reported on Friday night that a man had called her and mentioned he was from Police Protection. The fake organization’s name also showed up on her caller ID. According to the woman, the man asked for a credit or debit card number. However, the woman did not donate any money and instead called the police department.

Austin police detectives are trying to figure out from where the scammer may be based.
