The Packer gymnastics team had to settle for second place at the 10-team Class ‘A’ ‘true team’ state meet in Melrose Saturday.
Austin tallied a score of 183.275 and it was less than a point short of Melrose, which scored a 183.400. The Packers had won the ‘true team’ state meet in 2013.
“It was amazingly close the whole day with no one really having a commanding lead ever,” Austin head coach Mark Raymond said. “Our girls looked good and we did a nice job of bringing a few new skills to the meet.”
Austin went 4-for-5 on no falls on the beam and the team stepped up on the vault and bars as well. The Packers biggest problem on the floor is deciding who should compete.
“We have seven girls working really hard for five spots,” Raymond said. “Over the next week I will use two different lineups to help me decide what we will go with at sections. It’s hard for me to pick five, they are all so close.”
Austin will host Winona, ranked No. 6 in ‘AA,’ and Owatonna, ranked No. 12 in ‘AA’ Tuesday at the YMCA at 6 p.m.
